What is the most effective Psychotherapy?

When someone is in a bad headspace, the world of behavioral health offers its three most effective sources of health; Psychodynamic Therapy, CBT, and Psychiatric medication. In some cases, such as with couple’s marriage counseling and family therapy help improve the mental state of both parties.

Each treatment has its own advantages and drawbacks. Below we review each to help give you insight into which may be the most effective for your condition when seeking an in person or telehealth counseling professional.

Medication

At a certain point where the mine is in a complete haze from fear, anxiety, or despair even thinking is a task that cannot be executed without assistance. In this case, medication can aid one in a crisis, helping the physical mine recover so that it is more susceptible to new or ongoing treatments.

When correctly diagnosed and administered by a Psychiatrist without any additional conscious cooperation, pills help re-organize our brain chemistry allowing us to cope with each new day. In the beginning, they may cause fatigue, fogginess, or we may get a bit nauseous, but at least we are still around and functioning through our darkest time.

In some cases, medicine can get us standing on our own however it has not been proven effective enough to be a standalone treatment from other Psychotherapy options. Still it may be worth checking in with Psychotherapists in Milwaukee in order to set yourself on the right path.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT

Normally administered by a psychologist or psychiatrist in 6 to 10-hour long sessions, CBT teaches us techniques of managing and coping with internalized feelings of paranoia, low self-esteem, shame, and panic.

In a nutshell, CBT combines Cognitive Therapy by examining the things you think with Behavioral Therapy by examining the things you do.

CBT is a talking therapy, similar to Psychodynamic Therapy also known as Psychoanalytic Therapy. However, CBT focuses on practical implementations by creating goals and milestones for present day issues that may be affecting your mental health.

The theory behind CPT acknowledges that the way we think about situations may also affect the way we feel and behave. It also helps us identify triggers that lead to negative reoccurring thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

However, CBT does not always work for everyone. Some people struggle with this form of therapy because they find it too hard to talk about their feelings even though it is considered a short-term treatment.

Other times, because of the shortness of this type of therapy, it is not a fit for those struggling with more complex problems. The work can be strenuous for some, with ongoing tasks and activities like thought diaries or daily logs. You must dedicate yourself to practicing the new skills in order to recognize changes and how you feel.

If you do not feel like CBT is effective at a rate for you, there are alternatives to the treatment that you can discuss with your Psychotherapy/Behavioral Health Service Provider in Milwaukee Wisconsin.

Psychodynamic Therapy

From a distance, Psychodynamic Therapy may seem as if it has more drawbacks than positives because it has a very hard time proving advocacy in trials and studies. It also requires a larger amount of time and dedication and other options in the realm of psychotherapy. Sometimes up to two years. Therefore, Psychodynamic Therapy is also one of the most expensive forms of treatment.

Finally, it requires active dedication and long-term sustained emotional effort. However, in some cases it is the most effective in treatment properly alleviating distress for three solidly founded reasons.

Firstly, our unconscious feelings become conscious. Throughout the treatment the patient may experience a worsening in conditions as they are made aware of the difficulties that have led to certain instabilities. Through Psychodynamic Therapy we are confronted with memories that we have suppressed and are made to relive these instances of unhealthy relationships and self-sabotage.

In these cases, we cannot hold rational discussions, as proposed with CBT, because we cannot recognize the causes of our distress like we can in Psychodynamic Therapy. So, it is used as a tool for correcting self-ignorance and provides a safe space to reveal trauma.

Next, Psychodynamic therapy allows us to work with transference — a technical term that describes the way a patient will start to behave towards the therapist and where is the echo aspect of their most important and most traumatic past experiences. This allows the therapist to observe how those experiences have shaped how we interact socially and where our impulses come from.

Once this behavior is identified we can adjust it, with the help of the therapist, and guide it to fewer unfortunate directions.

Lastly, Psychodynamic Therapy provides the patient with the ideal “first good relationship” restoring us from the damage of the legacy of past bad relationships.

Prior to Psychodynamic treatment, patients most likely experience relationships with those who weren’t as reliable, attentive, boundary setting, and guiding as a therapist. When things go well their experience is transported into other relationships outside of treatment.

In this treatment, unlike others, we can regress two stages of development that went wrong and relayed them with a better ending. We learn to express need, anger, and devastation in proper ways. Generally, we are cured by repeated exposure to the sanity and kindness of our therapist.

However, just as the explained treatments before, psychotherapy won’t work for everyone. Factors like your willingness, your chemistry with your therapist, and true dedication will all come into play.

That said, there is no truly effective type of psychotherapy and treatment needs vary from person to person. With a proper commitment and fit any form of therapy can become the best thing we commit ourselves to doing.
